Benjamin Hughes

Benjamin Hughes is an independent arbitrator, a member of the SIAC Court of Arbitration and adjunct professor of law at the National University of Singapore.
He also serves on the Investment Committee of Omni Bridgeway, a leading funder of international commercial disputes, and as a member of the International Arbitration Committee of the KCAB and the Board of Directors of the Hainan International Arbitration Centre.
Since leaving law firm practice in March 2013, Ben has been appointed in over 200 international arbitrations with several billion dollars in dispute. Previously, he practised with Shearman & Sterling (in the US and Singapore),and was the founding co-chair of the international dispute resolution practice group at Shin & Kim, one of Korea’s oldest and largest full-service law firms.
While Ben’s experience as arbitrator spans a broad range of commercial sectors, applicable law, arbitration rules and jurisdictions, he is particularly recognised as a leading arbitrator in the Asia-Pacific region. He has lived, studied and worked in the region for almost 30 years, and is fluent in Korean and conversant in Mandarin. In addition, having studied and practised law in both civil and common law jurisdictions, Ben is uniquely suited to hear disputes between parties from various legal and cultural backgrounds.

Eric Ng

Eric is Deputy Secretary General at HKIAC.
Prior to joining the HKIAC, Eric worked for several years as a barrister-at-law in Hong Kong focusing primarily on international commercial and construction arbitrations, as well as general commercial litigation in Hong Kong, and has worked as counsel as well as tribunal secretary for several major international commercial, construction, and financial arbitrations around the world.
In addition to his work as a barrister, Eric was previously Adjunct Professor at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, lecturing in advocacy and investor-state arbitration.
He has also lectured at Tsinghua University and Peking University. Eric has also published on issues of international dispute resolution and investor-state arbitration.
Eric holds a BCL from Oxford University, PCLL and JD from City University from Hong Kong, MSc E-commerce from the University of Hong Kong, as well as a BS in Business Administration and Information Systems from Babson College in the USA. He is admitted to practice law in Hong Kong.

Jae Sung Lee

Jae Sung Lee is a senior legal officer at the International Trade Law Division (ITLD) of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, which functions as the substantive secretariat for the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
He currently functions as the Secretary of Working Group III on investor-State dispute settlement reform and has functioned as the secretary of Working Group II, which finalized the UNCITRAL Expedited Arbitration Rules as well as the working groups on secured transactions and electronic commerce.
Before joining the United Nations in 2007, Jae Sung served in the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A Korean national, Jae Sung is a graduate of Seoul National University College of Law, holds LL.M. degrees from Seoul National University Graduate School of International Studies and NYU School of Law as well as a Ph.D in Law from Seoul National University. He is also a member of the NY State bar.

Kevin Nash

Kevin is the Deputy Registrar & Centre Director of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). Since joining SIAC in 2012, Kevin has overseen the administration of thousands of international cases under all versions of the SIAC Rules and the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules across a range of seats and governing laws.
Kevin regularly speaks, writes and teaches on international commercial arbitration and investor-state dispute settlement. He is a member of the Singapore delegation at UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Settlement) and represents SIAC as an observer at UNCITRAL Working Group III (ISDS).
Kevin holds a B.A. from Mount Allison University and a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School. He previously worked at one of Canada's prominent 'Seven Sister' law firms before earning an LL.M. in International Commercial Arbitration at Stockholm University. He is qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor with the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Michael Lee

Mr. Lee recruits and maintains the highest qualified panel in Asia for the ICDR’s International Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators. He is responsible for the ICDR’s Asia regional operations, including arbitration and mediation in the rapidly expanding Singapore arbitral seat, providing executive oversight of large cases.
Michael is a frequent speaker to corporate and outside counsel on the importance of using arbitration and mediation to solve cross-border disputes, augmenting with research data on dispute management and business negotiation and clarifying the AAA-ICDR’s comprehensive rules and administrative process. He has been serving as the Chair of Legal Committee for AMCHAM (American Chamber of Commerce) Singapore since 2009.
Michael graduated with a LL.M. degree in International Commercial Arbitration from Stockholm University Law School in Sweden and received a J.D. from St. Thomas University Law School in Florida.

Steve Kim

Steve Kim is the Secretary-General of KCAB INTERNATIONAL.
As a US attorney, Steve has extensive experience in the field of international arbitration and served as the Director of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association (New York). During his tenure at ICDR, he helped to grow the ICDR to become the global number one international arbitration administration center. Steve also served as a senior corporate counsel for Samsung Corning Precision Material, advising on various corporate legal matters including dispute resolution, antitrust investigation, intellectual property negotiation, JV and host of other high-profile matters. Steve then went on to become the Korea country manager for CPA Global, one of the largest intellectual property legal service providers based in UK. As a country manager, Steve achieved multiple million USD in new sales and created a new business paradigm which helped CPA Global to become the largest IP service provider in Korea and other key Asian markets. Steve served as a Korea consultant for one of the largest EU law firm, assisting the firm to develop new business in Korea and made inroads to new revenue stream in the field of dispute resolution, IP, natural resources, technology and cross-border investment.
Recognizing the importance of helping new companies to grow beyond the Korean market, Steve advised several start-up companies in various industries including livestock health management and blockchain technology. Steve was invited to speak in numerous conferences to speak about business management, technology, IP and other issues in various countries including China and Denmark. Steve graduated from University of California San Diego (UCSD) in 1994 and received his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law (New York) in 1997. Steve is fluent in both English and Korean.

Dr Zhijin (Donna) Huang, Director of ICC Arbitration and ADR, North Asia. She is in charge of business development for ICC Arbitration and ADR services in Asia, with a focus on North Asia. Donna developed her experience working as a law professor, counsel, legal expert, and consultant in a Chinese University, a law firm as well as for ICC and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. Donna has been active in government-level academic exchange before she joined ICC. She was granted Fulbright Fellowship and EU Erasmus Fellowship and has published widely on issues of international law in China.

Sue Hyun Lim

Sue Hyun Lim is an attorney at Kim & Chang, who specializes in international arbitration and cross-border litigation matters.
During her 17+ years of career as an arbitration practitioner, she has represented international and domestic clients in diverse industries, including manufacturing, energy, sales and distribution, banking, insurance, pharmaceutical, construction, online gaming, information technology, etc. She draws her expertise from a wealth of experience in managing international disputes and advocating on behalf of clients in different forums. Over the years, she has worked as arbitration counsel, dispute advisor, arbitrator, and has overseen the international case management work at KCAB INTERNATIONAL, the international division of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB).
Prior to joining Kim & Chang, Ms. Lim served as the first Secretary General of KCAB INTERNATIONAL, where she was in charge of the arbitral institution’s international arbitration case management process and activities promoting Seoul as an international arbitration hub. Before that, Ms. Lim led a career in private practice, working in one of the major law firms in Korea as well as the New York office of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP.
Ms. Lim has advised and represented clients in international disputes, leading roles in over 45 international arbitration matters seated in locations throughout Asia, Europe, and the US, under rules of various arbitral institutions (including the ICC, SIAC, JCAA, and KCAB) in disputes involving a range of subject areas such as investment arbitration, post-M&A disputes, shareholders disputes, international construction, distributorship/technical licensing disputes, and intellectual property.

Alastair Henderson

Alastair has more than 20 years' experience handling major disputes across many sectors and industries, concerning a wide variety of trade, commercial and financial activities, with particular experience of oil, gas and power, construction and engineering, infrastructure and projects, and major foreign investment. He is very familiar with disputes in or concerning the countries of Southeast Asia, as well as international cases outside the region. His clients include governments and public bodies, state-owned and independent companies, international banks, and other multinational and leading regional companies.

Andrés Jana Linetzky

Andrés Jana is founding partner of Jana & Gil Dispute Resolution.

Eva Kalnina

Eva Kalnina is an independent arbitrator with Arbitration Chambers (London). She specialises in international arbitration with focus on energy, construction, shareholder and finance disputes. Eva has acted as arbitrator (chair, party-appointed, sole) in over 50 international arbitrations stemming from a wide array of industries under all major institutional arbitration rules. Eva is a Member of the ICC Court of Arbitration, the SCC Board, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. She is also a Member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators and currently sits as an arbitrator on two ICSID annulment committees.

Jeonghye Sophie Ahn

Swee Yen Koh

KOH Swee Yen, Senior Counsel, is a Partner in the Commercial & Corporate Disputes, and International Arbitration Practices.
Her practice has a particular focus on complex, high-value and cross-border disputes across a wide spectrum of matters from commercial, energy, international sales, trade, transport, technology to investment. She regularly appears before the Singapore Courts and in international arbitrations under the major institutional rules, including ICSID, ICC, ICDR, LCIA, SIAC, and UNCITRAL.
Swee Yen graduated with First Class Honours from the National University of Singapore (NUS). She was awarded the Singapore Academy of Law prize for being the top student in her final year, and served as a Justices' Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of Singapore before entering private practice.
Swee Yen is the Vice-Chair of the IPBA Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Committee, and a member of the ICCA-ASIL Task Force on Damages. She was the former Vice-Chair of the IBA Arbitration Committee, and was also on the Editorial Board of the ICC Dispute Resolution Bulletin. Professor Hi-Taek Shin is an arbitrator member of Twenty Essex Chambers (His practice base continues to be in Seoul). He is serving as the Governing Board member of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). He recently retired from Seoul National University School of Law where he taught international business transactions and resolution of commercial and investment disputes arising from cross-border transactions since 2007. Prior to moving to academia in 2007, he was a partner at Kim & Chang specializing in mergers and acquisitions, cross-border investments and the resolution of disputes arising from cross-border investment projects. He also served as the Chairman of the Korea Trade Commission. He regularly sits as an arbitrator, both in international commercial arbitrations and investment treaty arbitrations. He is on the panel of arbitrators for the HKIAC, AAA/ICDR, ICSID, JCAA, KCAB, SCIA and SIAC. He is a member of the international commercial expert committee of the Supreme People’s Court of China. He is on the International Advisory Board of Vienna International Arbitration Centre.
He authored the Korean chapter in ‘Commentaries on Selected Model Investment Treaties’ (C. Brown edited, 2013) and ‘UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and the Investment Treaty Arbitration Practice’ (in Korean, 2013). He also authored the Korean chapter in ‘‘The UNCITRAL Model Law and Asian Arbitration Laws’ (G. Bell ed., 2018, Cambridge University Press).
He also participated in the task force commissioned by the Ministry of Justice for the amendment of the Arbitration Act of Korea. He received LL.M. and J.S.D degrees from Yale Law School and LL.B. and LL.M degrees from Seoul National University.

Anna Joubin-Bret

Mrs. Anna Joubin-Bret is the Secretary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the Director of the Division on International Trade Law in the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, which functions as the substantive secretariat for UNCITRAL. She is the ninth Secretary of the Commission since it was established by the General Assembly in 1966.
Prior to her appointment on 24 November 2018, Mrs. Joubin-Bret practiced law in Paris specializing in International Investment Law and Investment Dispute Resolution. She focused on serving as counsel, arbitrator, mediator and conciliator in international investment disputes. She served as arbitrator in several ICSID, UNCITRAL and ICC disputes. Prior to 2011 and for 15 years, Mrs Joubin-Bret was the Senior Legal Adviser for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). She edited and authored seminal research and publications on international investment law, notably the Sequels to UNCTAD IIA Series, co-edited with Jean Kalicki a book on Reform of Investor-State Dispute Settlement in 2015.
She holds a post-graduate degree (DEA) in Private International Law from the University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne, a Masters Degree in International Economic Law from University Paris I and in Political Science from Institut d’Etudes Politiques. She was Legal Counsel in the legal department of the Schneider Group, General Counsel of the KIS Group and Director-Export of Pomagalski S.A. She has been appointed judge at the Commercial Court in Grenoble (France) and was elected Regional Counsellor of the Rhône-Alpes Region in 1998.

Professor Jaemin Lee, Seoul National University Jaemin Lee is currently Professor of Law at School of Law, Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. He obtained his LL.B., LL.M. and Ph.D. from Seoul National University; LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center; and J.D. from Boston College Law School. His major areas of teaching and research are public international law, international economic law and international dispute settlement. Upon graduation from College of Law, Seoul National University in 1992, he joined the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a foreign service officer. His post in the ministry included deputy directorship of the Treaties Division and the North American Trade Division. Between 2000 and 2004, he also practiced law with Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP (Washington, D.C. office) as an associate attorney of the firm’s international trade group. From 2004 to 2013 he taught international law and international economic law at School of Law, Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea. He has published articles and books (including book chapters) on various topics of public international law, international investment law and international trade law. Since 2012, he has been participating in UNCITRAL Working Groups II and III as delegate of the Republic of Korea.

Dr.Lars Markert

Lars is a partner in our international dispute resolution department. He regularly advises Asian clients, in particular from Japan, on German and European law issues, spanning a broad range of industries and subjects from international disputes, commercial negotiations, to internal investigations and compliance. He also advises German and other European clients on their business activities in Asia. He has particular experience in contentious proceedings involving post-M&A, commercial, manufacturing, construction and distribution matters, in areas such as life sciences, automotive and energy. Lars also deals with cases involving governments, and has advised foreign investors and sovereign states on issues of foreign direct investment and public international law, including related negotiations and investor-state disputes. He has been involved in more than 45 international arbitrations as counsel or arbitrator under the arbitration rules of institutions such as the DIS, ICC, Swiss Chambers, NAI, ICDR, KCAB, JCAA, SIAC and ICSID, as well as under UNCITRAL Rules.
Lars is the winner of the 2020 Lexology client choice award for “Arbitration and ADR” in Japan. Meg Kinnear

Meg Kinnear is the Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Ms. Kinnear joined ICSID in June 2009.
She worked as Senior General Counsel (2006-2009) and Director General of the Trade Law Bureau of Canada (1999-2006). Prior to this, Ms. Kinnear also worked as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Justice of Canada (1996 -1999) and Counsel at the Civil Litigation Section of the Canadian Department of Justice (1984-1996).
Ms. Kinnear has frequently spoken on and published with respect to international investment law and procedure, including as a co-author of Investment Disputes under NAFTA (Kluwer Law Publications, June 2006; updated editions released January 2008 and June 2009).
Ms. Kinnear holds degrees from the University of Virginia (LL.M.) and McGill University (LL.B.). She is admitted to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada (Ontario) and the District of Columbia Bar.

Dr. Rajesh Sharma

Dr. Rajesh Sharma is currently teaching at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Before that he was Assistant Professor at School of Law, City University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Sharma has taught courses on arbitration, mediation, negotiation, foreign investment arbitration, WTO Law, international trade, banking law, foreign investment in Hong Kong, Macao, India, Australia, China and Africa (where he is associated with the Institute for Legal Excellence in Uganda). He has served as the Legal Advisor to the Macau University of Science and Technology. He has advised transnational companies on trade and investment policy in China and has done training courses with and for the WTO and UNITAR.
Dr. Sharma is the first Indian to hold PhD in Law from China. He holds PhD from the Chinese University of Political Science and Law, Beijing, a Master of Business Law from Monash University, Australia, an M.Phil from City University of Hong Kong and the Bachelor of Laws from the University of Delhi. He has received training for arbitrators from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva; and International Chamber of Commerce, Vienna. Dr. Sharma has received training of a mediator for community conflict resolution by the Plowshares Institute, USA and the Accord Group of Australia. He has also obtained professional training in negotiation at Harvard Law School. He has received training for teachers of WTO organized by UNU-IAS.
Dr. Sharma has researched extensively on the arbitration laws of China and India and other Asian countries, Investment Arbitration, Dispute Settlement in FTAs, WTO related issues, investment law and mediation. He has publications in the areas of WTO law, international trade, arbitration and dispute resolution, commercial law, and banking law. Recently he has published a book with Wolters Kluwer titled “Dispute Settlement Mechanism in the FTAs of Asia”.
At CityU, Dr. Sharma was the Director of Mooting and coach of VIS Arbitration Moot at CityU. The team coached by Dr. Sharma has won the VIS (East) and VIS (Vienna) Championship in 2012 and 2013 respectively. He also designed the International ADR Moot Competition which is unique in the world because it combines arbitration and mediation where a student also takes part in as a mediator.

Professor Franck is an expert in the fields of international economic law, dispute settlement, and the empirical analysis of international law. Professor Franck's legal experience includes serving at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and practicing in international dispute settlement with Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering [now Wilmer Hale] in Washington, DC and Allen & Overy in London, England. She has been qualified to practice law in England and Wales, Minnesota and the District of Columbia. She is on the Executive Council of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and the immediate past Chair of the Academic Council, an active member of the American Society of International Law and a former member of the Executive Council, a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and an elected member of the American Law Institute.
Professor Franck has made major scholarly and policy contributions into the development of international law and dispute resolution. She is the author of the major 2019 Oxford University Press book, Arbitration Costs: Myths and Realities in Investment Treaty Arbitration, as well as the author of articles in prestigious journals including the American Journal of International Law, Duke Law Journal, Emory Law Journal, Fordham Law Review, Harvard Journal of International Law, Minnesota Law Review, North Carolina Law Review, Virginia Journal of International Law, and Washington University Law Review. In connection with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, she organized the Joint Symposium on International Investment and Alternative Dispute Resolution, http://investmentadr.wlu.edu, and created the UNCTAD publication summarizing the proceedings, which occurred through a collaboration blog, other online mediums and a traditional in-person conference.
She has presented her research to major international organizations including the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the International American Development Bank (IADB), the International Centre for Settlement if Investment Disputes (ICSID), and the United Nations Commission on Trade and Investment (UNCTAD), and across the globe in Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Republic of Korea, The Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States. Professor Franck has been elected to the International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration since 2008 and received the "New Voices" award from the American Society of International Law (ASIL) for her groundbreaking empirical analysis of investment treaty arbitration.

Dr. Vilawan Mangklatanakul, Director-General, Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, is a career diplomat who has been with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand since 1995. She has built her expertise in important areas of international law including diplomatic and State immunities, treaty law, intellectual property and international economic law. She also has a keen interest in alternative dispute settlement and international law on climate change.
As an avid practitioner, Dr. Vilawan has extensive experience on issues of diplomatic and State immunities, ranging from providing advices to cases in both home and foreign jurisdictions to drafting domestic legislation granting privileges and immunities to international organisations and participants of international conferences. At a regional front, she was actively involved in the negotiations of the Agreement on the Privileges and Immunities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Throughout her career, Dr. Vilawan has been applying her legal expertise for the benefit of international law development, particularly in the context of the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Her invaluable contribution in Working Group of UNCITRAL on arbitration has been widely recognized as Thailand continues its active role in reflecting perspectives of developing countries in the global initiative on the investor-state dispute settlement reform.
Dr. Vilawan has played a key role in the legal team of the Royal Thai Government in various international disputes, including the case concerning the request for interpretation of Temple of Preah Vihear judgment at the ICJ, WTO dispute settlement cases on Thailand – Customs and Fiscal Measures on Cigarettes from the Philippines and Thailand – Subsidies concerning Sugar, and Thailand’s investor-state arbitration cases. She also negotiated the Protocol to the ASEAN Charter on Dispute Settlement Mechanisms, the Dispute Settlement Chapter in the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement and in the FTA negotiations between Thailand and the United States. Furthering from her expertise in the field of dispute settlement, Dr. Vilawan successfully advocated for the establishment of Thailand’s Committee on the Protection of International Investment to systematically manage investment arbitration cases.

Steven Finizio's practice focuses on international dispute resolution. Mr. Finizio also serves as an arbitrator. He has particular experience with energy, financial services, shareholder, joint venture and M&A, and manufacturing issues. Todd Wetmore, a founding partner of Three Crowns, is based in Paris, where he has handled complex international commercial arbitration cases for over 25 years.
